Virender IPS (Retd) has been appointed as the State Chief Information Commissioner for West Bengal by Governor Dr C V Anand Bose. The oath of office was administered to him at Raj Bhavan in the presence of BP Gopalika, Additional Chief Secretary, Home Department.
However, the appointment of Virender IPS (Retd) has faced objections from the Leader of Opposition and BJP MLA Shubhendu Adhikari. He expressed his strong objection in a tweet and called it an unfortunate appointment.
According to the press statement released by the Bengal Raj Bhavan, Virender IPS (Retd) has been appointed under Section 15(3) of the Right to Information Act, 2005 (No. 22 of 2005) for a term of three years.
Virender IPS (Retd) has previously served as the Director General of Police and will now take charge as the Chief Information Commissioner for the state of West Bengal.
